Barry K. Shuster

Barry is founding editor of Restaurant Startup & Growth (RS&G), the official magazine of

A UC-Davis alumnus, he became interested in the agricultural and food industry while in college, and began his publishing career covering agribusiness in California's Salinas Valley for Casey Newspapers, Inc. He has been a contributor and editor with Parkville, Mo.-based Specialized Publications Company, the parent company of RS&G, since 1991.

Barry's interest in foodservice and hospitality management education extends into the university classroom. He is a faculty member at both East Carolina University and North Carolina Central University where he teaches law and ethics in their respective hospitality management degree programs. He holds the Certified Hospitality Educator designation from the American Hotel & Lodging Association.

Barry earned his MBA at Pepperdine University and his J.D. at North Carolina Central University School of Law. He is admitted to practice before all North Carolina State and U.S. district courts, as well as the U.S. Supreme Court. He is a certified superior court mediator and court-appointed arbitrator, and has advised and represented businesses in a variety of industries, including restaurants.

He assisted Jim Laube, president of, as co-editor of the National Restaurant Association's Uniform System of Accounts for Restaurants, Eighth Edition, scheduled for publication in fall 2011.
